Historical Walks

Malacca, Malaysia's most historical city, has seen the rise and fall of major empires that extended their influences to this region. The legacy of the Malay Sultanate, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese, Dutch and British is evident in Malacca's medieval charm, picturesque buildings, multi-racial population and narrow streets. The Majestic Malacca offers daily complimentary tours, which pass through prominent historical landmarks, age-old religious institutions, 600 year-old narrow alleys of the city, and quaint shop houses, providing a beguiling journey through an enchanting heritage.

The Empress' Hill at Bukit Cina
Located nearby The Majestic Malacca is the serene landscape of Malacca's Chinese Hill or locally referred to as Bukit Cina. This hill site is significant as it was used by the first Chinese entourage that arrived to foster trade relations with Parameswara in the 15th century. Led by Imperial Admiral Cheng Ho, who later established Malacca port as a glorious empire for commerce between the east and the west Asian region, this hill site became an outpost for his entourage.

Admiral Cheng Ho was also instrumental in the great romance between Sultan Mansor Shah and Princess Hang Li Po, the daughter of Emperor Yung Lo of the Ming Dynasty who arrived Malacca in the year 1459. Their union lead to further racial harmony and inter-marriages between the two races that eventually gave birth to the Peranakan culture. Princess Hang Li Po later resided at the foothills of Bukit Cina and the water well that was once used by the Princess to bathe is still found beside the unique Chinese temple called Poh San Teng, or the Precious Mountain Temple, which was dedicated to Admiral Cheng Ho's visit.

The historic route takes guests of The Majestic Malacca through a trekking path around the hill leading up to a commanding bird's-eye view of Malacca City's shoreline and landscape.

The Route to Malacca’s History
The Majestic Malacca provides a glimpse into the splendid saga of an extraordinary empire. Founded centuries ago by a Sumatran prince named Parameswara, Malacca grew to become a powerful sultanate and the centre of the lucrative spice trade, visited by Arab, Tamil and Chinese merchants and subjected to dominance by the Portuguese, Dutch and British in turn. Each left their mark, creating the unique and enduring allure of the city today.

The walk along the Malacca River unfolds stories and legends as the historical city awakes. This guided walk begins at The Majestic Malacca and passes through significant landmarks of the city’s history along the river ending at one of the oldest remnants of Portuguese colonial presence, the Porta de Santiago or A’Famosa Fort. This is a walk that takes you back to the cosmopolitan city of commerce in the 16th century.
